First, i like the idea of a name; however the name changes regularly depending on the space and time he visits; in our day and time, and the current Inspector it's Smith, because he looks for a common/recognizable name. He also addresses The Operator by this name. The Operator is the AI that runs the DARSIT, and selects period specific cloths and currency etc.

DARSIT was his mother's name for it.

I think that the inside of the Darsit is small. It is bigger on the inside than the outside, but the only thing he keeps there is a tiny bedroom. Anything he needs can be called out by the operator. He could have anything in there, but he likes to have a bed. Maybe a couple of chairs. The set for it is tiny.

It does however always look like a phone booth to other, even operates like one. This can leads to an optical illusion, that everyone is crammed in to a tiny phone booth.

If he needs to make a phone call he'll step out, then step back in.

The DARSIT or whatever we will name it is the size of a phone booth on the inside. That's the point, as a parody.

We can't actually name it the DARSIT because of copy-rite issues brought to our attention by Travis. We're complying with this and NBC's wishes by changing the name, probably to BOOTH. In the end though the canon show name in Community isn't known yet. Once we see what happens there we'll come to a final conclusion about all this.

I do think an Operator is good though. We should never see the Operator but it can be a great side character. You can hear him when the Inspector uses the phone and he probably talks to him out loud too, but you can't hear him without using the phone.

I stick by the idea of a "name" that changes with the time/audience/inspector; each time standing for something that means roughly the same thing.

As for the interior, I quote "Stare into darkness":

Quote:
BROOKE
Nothing. Not yet, anyway. I also keep telling you to make the DARSIT bigger.

INSPECTOR
Well why don’t you do it then if you’re such an expert?

BROOKE
(Eyeing the controls speculatively)

INSPECTOR
(Hastily)
That wasn’t an invitation!

CONSTABLE
It bloody well should be.

BROOKE
Outv-

INSPECTOR
The DARSIT outvotes you both because that something that’s bigger on the inside would just be ridiculous. Where did you say you wanted to go again?

It seems clear from the script that it is possible, but not permitted. if traveling as a phone booth, it would have to stay as a phone booth to prevent observation of Space Master's tech.

However, it is clear that it couldn't be a phonebooth all the time . . .in DW the camouflager circuit is broken, but it doesn't make sense for it to be that in historical context, or futuristic context, or other worldly context.

Ok, a few thoughts on my favorite bits:

I like the idea of there being a repository for evidence of some kind. Maybe that's the place where the Operator actually exists, and only communicates to the Inspector via a Time-space Carrier wave. I also think iaminspectorspacetime has a perfect point that the Inspector SHOULD be essentially homeless. Perhaps we never see the Repository except in Very Special Episodes. I think fluffygonzalez had a good way to go on this with the stakeout points scattered thoughout the galaxy, too.

I like BOOTH, but I think a more professional acronym would be a good idea. Box Of Oscillating Temporal Harmonics is close… but lets see a few more. But for now, it seems everyone is OK with B.O.O.T.H., so let's make that change?
(Associate: "You named your time machine after a phone booth?"
Inspector: "No, people named phone booths after my time machine. We were here first.")
Maybe someone affectionately refers to it as "Red."

I think that the fact that it's always slightly too cozy, but there's always room for one more is PERFECT. Lock that down.

Dispensing period-appropriate currency is good, though as far as outfits goes, I always liked the fact that the Doctor never cared if he didn't fit in.

donotlookatthelion's idea of it never being locked is also brilliant. No worries about it ever being stolen, because it only works for the Inspector. (Voice identification?)

kris: I LOVE Special Investigative Apparatus for Regulation of Time and Space. Thanks for that :-)

I really liked booth. I think we should make this "canon" unless there is some serious objection. We have some people on here quite good with backronyms, hopefully they will log in and share their ideas this week.

An ongoing joke, that has run since the first serial in '62, is that whenever the Inspector arrives at the DARSIT, there is always someone on the phone. Most incarnations of the Inspector will just pull the person out, but it was a signature quirk of the 6th Inspector that he would always wait for them to finish their phone call before ejecting them, even during a world-ending calamity.
"They were here first, and manners are manners." was one of his catchphrases.

And possibly most of the people who do use the Darcy phone come out quite shaken, as if they had been connected not with who they were calling, but someone they needed to talk to, even if it was Julius Caesar...

What if the Operator is the being who hands out assignments to all members of the Chronological Investigations Division, and who the Inspector has to report back to?

I really like B.O.O.T.H. Maybe the acronym is never explained...

I was thinking that the Operator was more of a never seen switchboard operator who is only heard through the phone. I think in the earlier series he would have had a separate boss DCI who was seen only very occasionally but most of his instructions would have been conveyed through the Operator. an evidence room would be a good compromise, its not a home but it can have all sorts of gadgets and whatnots.

I like the referring to the B.O.O.T.H as Red.
As to what the acronym stands for, maybe he makes up a different one each time but also acts as if that's what its always been.

I agree about the currency and on the constant costume.

+love the CID name.

Just wanna say, the CID name wasn't mine. I wish I could credit whoever came up with it. I thought I'd caught it on TVTropes, but I couldn't spot it when I just checked. Whoever did original think of it, good job. I love it, too.

I'm a fan of the "Wandering Loner" version of the Inspector.

Instead of having his own personal base (space station, flat, etc), why not have him just go somewhere in the B.O.O.T.H. ?

Random civilian checks into hotel room to find a red telephone box in the room, the shower running and singing coming from the bathroom.

Random civilian heads out to their yard, newspaper under arm, and find a red telephone box next to the outhouse.

YMMV,

I will try to come up with costumes for one through eleven I have a few ideas like inspector uniforms, big buttoned uniform jackets with slacks. Also gonna try to come up with a look for the optic pocketknife.

Also thought about calling the BOOTH a C.C.(Chronal Cruising) Brand 80 epoch craft BOOTH (nice named red)

I like that a lot. Very funny ;) So is someone making this change to the TVtropes and other sources?
