Topic Summary

And when impending disaster looms, the high-pitched sound of the Monastary Gong will peal forth from the DARSIT's phone handset, to serve as a warning to the Inspector and his Associates.

In the center of the console, the DARDIT has a tube containing...*dons glasses*...a Wheel of Time. Which, because of the topsy-turvy-spacey-wacey nature of the DARSIT, works just like normal wheels. Except in space-time.

May I put some of this info on the wiki page?

Go for it. And TV Tropes, if you're on it.

As a phone booth, the DARSIT can never be locked.
An ongoing joke, that has run since the first serial in '62, is that whenever the Inspector arrives at the DARSIT, there is always someone on the phone. Most incarnations of the Inspector will just pull the person out, but it was a signature quirk of the 6th Inspector that he would always wait for them to finish their phone call before ejecting them, even during a world-ending calamity.
"They were here first, and manners are manners." was one of his catchphrases.

Haha! I like this.

So I can't tell if we're still working on the name for the TARDIS, which I've gathered from other threads we want to have stand for something significant that describes what Inspector does rather than moving around the letters and keeping them to stand for the same thing as that other show.

In the introductions thread, it seems like we may have settled on
SIVARTIS: Systematic/Special InVestigative Apparatus for the Regulation of Time in Space

I like the concepts behind it, but I think SIVARTIS is a bit awkward to say, and the parody would work best keeping to a 2 syllable pronunciation.

Here are some ideas I had. Feel free to use or not use them. They're basically just an edit/trimming of ideas already suggested using the same letters that exist in TARDIS.

TASRID - Time And Space Relativity Investigation Device
TASRID - Time And Space Regulative Investigation Device
DARSIT - Designated Accidental Response for Systematic Investigation and Tomfoolery
DARSIT - Designated Advanced Response for Spontaneous Investigation and Tomfoolery

(I personally like including the word tomfoolery and using it in combination with other words that sound serious, because it seems to fit both the concept behind Inspector Spacetime and what often happens in that OTHER show.)

Again, I realize none of these may be used, but I kind of like coming up with them, so here's another. I wanted to come up something that used both device and tomfoolery, because of the multiple meanings of the word device. I also do think it would be nice to keep DARSIT since so many people have already made artwork, etc that uses it.

DARSIT:
Device Assumed to React Spontaneously, Inciting Tomfoolery
Device Assumed to React Spontaneously and Incite Tomfoolery

Some other possibilities for the A and I:
Accustomed, Acknowledged
Inspire, Induce

(Yes, I like the thesaurus.)

Are we actually going to change DARSIT?

Because I like DARSIT. I'm attached to DARSIT.

This. Times ten.

The DARSIT is affectionately known as The Darcy by fans, and this suits its traditionally persnickety operational nature. This nickname was first coined by Seventh Inspector's punk Associate, Jack.

As for the DARSIT's acronym, I think something a little more unexpected would be just keen. Something like...

Dynamic Alteration of Reality, Synchronized Inversely to Time or
Direct Access to Random Slipstreams In Time or
Deuterium Alloy Reactor System for Instant Travel or
Don't Allow Really Sneaky Inspectors to Touch or
Doctors Aren't Really So Impressive, Tool.

Pft, Sparky, that last one.

I prefer DARSIT over everything just because it's easy to say and it fits the "TARDIS" rhythmic pattern. We can talk to over with Trav. I think changing the letters to mean something other than the words in "TARDIS" would be a good way to differentiate it from DW.

Everyone can come up with ideas for that. I'll share some of my own later. So far I really liked the first three sparky listed and "Desginated Advanced Response for Systematic Investigation and Tomfoolery", which combines cris's first two. Though if I may put my two cents in, I don't much like the use of "Tomfoolery" in the acronym since the Space Masters are painted as a rather stuffy society. We could still try to find a way to make it amusing. Or have the operator describe things as "Tomfoolery" a lot.

I quite like Sparky's first two as well. :)

Ok, guys, one quick note. I mentioned this in another thread, but there are other issues with having a name SO close to TARDIS. Namely, legal issues. Of course, you guys are the fans, and can do whatever the heck you want, but after a short conversation with the "Community" writer, I can tell you that A) they are very aware of what the fans are building here, and want to honor it as much as possible, and B) they will never use the term DARSIT because they're afraid of being sued.

We can think of other names for the phone booth, and I think we should before this gets too firmed up in people's minds. And in general, lets find ways to poke fun at the conventions and tropes of DW, but be careful of being just the opposite of one detail or another.

All that being said, all the details here ABOUT the phone booth are absolutely GOLDEN brilliance.

So I was actually thinking about this very thing this morning...around 6am so it's quite possibly a bad suggestion. With any hope it'll get the ball rolling.

I thought since the Inspector is logical and often unfeeling. He may not be too creative when naming an inanimate object.

I propose we name it TIM...[TI]me [M]achine.
