We should figure out what our main character is like. 1. What is the Inspector's personality like? Georgiathekiwi's fanfic paints him as kind of cold, willing to do what it takes to get the job done. I ran with that on the TVTropes page, trying to paint him in the description as an "Ends Justify the Means" sort of bloke. 2. What is the Inspector's physiology like? I remember reading something about him having a "missing heart", I kinda like that. Also, what triggers Metamorphosis, do you think?

Yeah, the Inspector in my fic is quite brutal, and he doesn't seem to care very much about his associates (or, at least, Jeffrey). I think he's one of the earlier Inspectors, still feeling very alien and angry with the world.
Or, perhaps, the Inspector is like this because he has a missing heart and his tendency for cold cruelty is something that the right circumstances can inspire in any metamorphosis. Hmm.

I like the idea that his cold nature is connected to his missing heart. Maybe one of his motivations is searching the Universe to find something to replace the heart that his species lost/never had in the first place? Or he brings along associates to compensate for his missing heart?
Maybe metamorphosis is some kind of genetic failsafe installed by early Space Masters. If he breaks certain Space Master laws, he's forced into Metamorphosis (an attempt to "reset" them in hopes this version will be more law-abiding).

I think his associates go a long way to make him feel like he has a heart. It's not the same, though, and he'll never stop searching for a replacement 'heart'. Too bad the stupid Universe keeps getting in the way and needing saving.
I love that idea so much! Perhaps the reset works to try and erase some of his memories as well as changing his personality. But, this hasn't worked so well since his earlier metamorphoses. These days he can just shrug most of it off, but for the first few his memories were really damaged and he only got them back because he's so damn stubborn. Ideas?

Maybe the Inspector is drawn to associates who are also searching for something or looking to improve themselves. We could turn this whole thing into some kind of bizarre Wizard of Oz journey/fetch quest/whathaveyou.

That's a good idea. Then we could get resolution in that his associates can find what they are searching for, while the Inspector still doesn't.

I think this is how you guys already think of it but i want to make sure.. The Inspector doesn't have a heart but in a tin man sort of way right? I mean his personality can be a bit colder than the tin man but he tries extra hard because he knows its not there.

I think so. I mean the tropes page does note that his first incarnation on the screen was deeply moral.
(Note: The missing heart would also make him emphasize a lot more with the Oddities, I think).

Someone might want to update Tropes on Jeffrey, since it refers to the Inspector's reaction to his death as a "tearjerker" and Heroic BSOD moment.
---
Also, I'm pro-tries extra hard since that'd explain why his race decided to try policing the universe and helping people. Also, Richey does play the Inspector as the friendlier sort. I know WoG is that the Inspector's baseline personality isn't supposed to change between Metamorphoses, but every actor and actress has brought their own interpretation.

The musical episode was one of my favorites!!

Well I think we have to make sure to keep in mind that although he's technically heartless, that doesn't mean he's always cruel. Yes the first one was probably the coldest of all of them, but it was more a "fact versus feeling" cold. Back then if getting the facts meant leaving an associate stranded on a smelly bog planet, then so be it. The earlier episodes were a kids show, though, so I think that gave rise to his moral laws. Like, he could strand his associates places or pretend to use them as bait, but he could never allow them to get killed or actually sacrifice them to a Modracor or something.
However in the newer series, he's been travelling with humans and aliens for a while. The core difference between the Inspector and the Sergeant is that the Inspector, whether he wants to admit it or not, is learning to feel more deeply (and he's pretty funny sometimes). That's one of the reasons meeting the Oddities affected him so greatly.
Plus he even saved Lily once at the sacrifice of the case. Remember that? The forums went nuts.

You know from how we've described The Inspector so far, he sounds like a very Holmsian character to me.
I like that. DW originally had the Doctor as a sort of space-Holmes, but he quickly became something really divergent from that. With The Inspector, I think he reads as a much more classic Holmes/detective character. He enjoys the mystery and may seem emotionally distant (and delightfully clever) but maintains deep moral boundaries and eventually can come to understand emotions through his counterpart/Watsons.
I really want to see some expansion on Captain James Haggard though. His premise has a lot of potential imho.
PS: I'm right in thinking that no Space Masters have hearts, right? It's just a part of their physiology? Or are there some that do have hearts?
