I still like DARSIT. But I suppose I could get behind SMITH. But not very far behind, and I'd still be holding a little photo of the DARSIT and crying a bit. I'd get behind Smith any day! Matt Smith.

Out of curiosity (and fanart purposes), what does the interior of the DARSIT look like? And how the console and everyone fits in there, etc. (also, where are the bathrooms? Does it even have bathrooms?)

It looks just like a phone booth on the inside.

ROBESPIERRE: Red Operations Box for Extended Space Pandemonium Investigation (Extra Room for Riders Expansion) OMG I missed the reference the first 6 times I read this. Maybe you're just a french history buff, but I'm hoping this is a tribute to Hartnell's "Reign of Terror" serial. I think everyone who is going to weigh in has. time to make the poll? We've heard: TIM - [TI]me [M]achine (probably not worth putting on the poll) MATT - Mechanical Apparatus for Transportation in Time SMITH - Space Machine In Time Habitance TRAVIS - Temporal Realignment Activity Vehicle of Inspector Spacetime ROBESPIERRE - Red Operations Box for Extended Space Pandemonium Investigation (Extra Room for Riders Expansion)

And I'd like to vote for ROBESPIERRE, but I'm clearly biased and you shouldn't count my vote.

How about the Acronym "T.R.A.V.E.S.T.Y."
The Relativity Acess Vehicle (Exploring or Expanding) pick one Space & Time (Yacht or Yearly) pick one
OR T.R.A.V.E.S.T. Can be pronounced the same way
The Relativity Acess Vehicle (Exploring or Expanding) pick one Space & Time

I would imagine that the Inspector maintains an apartment somewhere in Space/Time which he uses as a base of operations, eat, sleep and use the toilet. The advantage of this is that he can redecorate/get a new apartment every so often to reflect his various incarnations, in a similar but more credible reflection of the regeneration of the TARDIS. It also links him into that Sherlock-Holmesy feel we are looking for. I imagine wing chairs, willow pattern crockery and lots of random items of 'Space Equipment' strewn around the place!

Perhaps. I'm sure he had a home back on his planet, but he ditched the Academy.

If he's the last of his race, there can't be much serviceable property left on his planet now. Plus, he needs somewhere to store stuff and abloot. Either he'd have to frequent hotels, or have some kind of base of operations, be it on Earth, the moon, Alpha Centauri or his own planet.
Speaking purely from a practicality basis, it is very difficult to film in a phonebox, and there would need to be somewhere we could see the Inspector taking tea and explain/plotting/waiting for the call to duty. If this place is never the same, you lose the opportunity to learn more about the character by seeing the way he lives: how tidy he is, what porcelain animals he keeps, how he treats his landlord and explains why there is a phonebox in the bathroom. It seems to me an obvious narrative device.

Not because he's overprotective of the human species, but because he lives here.

But I have a nice apartment in the West End, andlike anyone else, I hate it when someone messes up my back garden."

I think it would be funny if he somehow managed an actual apartment. Like, there's nothing unusual about it, it's just an apartment. He liked London and got one there that he visits sometimes and doesn't tell anyone about. Also it's under a fake name.
Then again if we give him a place of residence it takes away his "wandering loner" feel. Maybe we could come to some sort of compromise? Perhaps the DARSIT will dispense an armchair for him when he asks for it and he'll sit in the ship on his chair with books piled around him. But the associates have to fend for themselves.
I'm just not sure he should have a physical home. Do we want to go that direction?
