In 'A note from the Inspector', Travis 'Sivartis' Richey suggested that for the best parody, highlighting the tropes found in a particular show or type of show in an original manner, rather than a shot-for-shot remake with silly names and gags.
Following Travis' suggestion, I thought it may be helpful to make a list of the general things that are conjured up of when you think of DW. Many of these were drawn on for the IS segment on Community, which is what made it so successful, e.g.:
And all that in a few seconds. We've already done some great work with explaining no heart, associates etc. However, I think there's plenty more to draw on in our work. Some of these have already been drawn on in ideas already discussed, but I think listing them generally may help to create more ideas. Some which immediately spring out to me are:
I can see Inspector Spacetime, as an Infinity Knight, being responsible for investigating and resolving problems with the Space-Time continuum an temporal crimes, arresting Time Criminals (perhaps the Doctor is one of the worst culprits) and in summary, policing existence. Combining these tropes with perhaps a more investigative nature of IS, and you've got the making of a strong, standalone concept which serves as a good parody.
There are many more of these DW tropes. Please continue to add them below to spark ideas!
Following Travis' suggestion, I thought it may be helpful to make a list of the general things that are conjured up of when you think of DW. Many of these were drawn on for the IS segment on Community, which is what made it so successful, e.g.:
- Man travelling in Space/time in a phonebox
- Iconic costume
- Travelling with someone else
- Very British
- Filmed in a rocky quarry in Kent (early series)
- Slightly dodgy looking villains with silly names
- Villains with short, repeatable catchphrases.

- Making everyday objects scary (Snarling Lions fall into this, but there could also be evil postboxes, fire hydrants, electric sockets...)
- A solve everything device (optic penknife, sonic crowbar etc)
- Technobable
- Lead character one step ahead
- Viewing the unusual through the familiar (the eyes of the associates)
- Temporal causality
- Russell T Series: Pan-Sexuality and Spin-offs, Lead character loneliness
- Recent series: Psychological threats and solutions, Hidden messages and long arc story device
